Baron Franz d'Epinay (フランツ・デピネー男爵, Furantsu Depinē Danshaku?) is the childhood friend of Albert de Morcerf. As a child his father was politically murdered by Noirtier de Villefort.
Appearance[]
Franz was around the same height as his friend Albert and had light blonde hair. Franz often wore clothing with a gray shade to them, but he alternated his color of clothing from time to time. Franz's design was less flamboyant than other characters, reflecting his grounded personality and sense of responsibility towards Albert.
Personality[]
More cynical than his comrade, he investigates the origins of the Count of Monte Cristo, but unlike the others he attempts to maintain his good relationship with Albert, the Count's most avid defender. Incredibly loyal to his friends, Franz was, in many ways, Albert's voice of reason, often doubting the intentions of the Count of Monte Cristo. Franz also had high moral standards, refusing to associate himself with the Count due to his blatant moral dubiousness that Albert was seemingly blind to for much of the series.
To save Albert's life, Franz drugged him on the night before his duel with the Count and fought in his place, dying in the process. It is ambiguous whether or not the Count knew of the deception prior to the boy's death.
